The Vartiosaari cottage is a celebration of simple living. The island of about 3 ha is located in the middle of the Katusselkä protected area. There is an old ranger’s log cabin and sauna built in the 1920s. The island is a geologically very interesting site. It shows the traces of the Ice Age and the sudden changes in the water level of Lake Saimaa. The hut is built on an ancient bank and behind the sauna there is a longitudinal ridge and a “suppa”. The prehistory of the area is illustrated by nearby rock paintings. The area is also home to Saimaa ringed seals, which are nice to observe in early spring or summer.
The island has a wide variety of beaches to suit all tastes. You can sit on the beach under the shelter of a pine forest, on a rocky or sandy beach. The beach in front of the sauna has a small pebbled bottom and on the north side of the island there is a completely sandy beach.
The buildings have been completely renovated in their original spirit. We hope it will serve as a resting place for as many paddlers as possible who appreciate the peace and quiet of nature. In the hut can sleep five people. The island is also suitable for larger groups as, in addition to the cabin, you can also stay in tents.
The Vartiosaari hut is the second night base on the Three Cabins paddling route. You can also request individual nights of accommodation on the island. The shortest distance from the car road to the island is 2 km. The hut offers excellent shelter for those who enjoy paddling also in early spring and late autumn.
Equipment on the reserve island:

- 110 cm wide bunk bed + 80 cm wide sleeping loft
- Blankets and pillows (please take with you bedlinens or sleeping bag)

- solar electricity (phone charging)

- cooking utensils and crockery
- new well ( water has not yet been tested, so for the time being bottled water is also available at the cabin if you do not want to bring water with you. The price of water is 4€ / 5l )

Note! Paddling huts are serviced once a week. Please be kind and always leave the hut cleaned and in such a condition that the next one is comfortable to come.
